Da Bac Community-based Tourism

Da Bac Community-based Tourism (CBT), funded by Dr Vance Gledhill and implemented by The Australian Foundation for the Peoples of Asia and the Pacific (AFAP) in Vietnam, is aimed at developing new business opportunities and tourism activities that encourage an equitable distribution of profits and provide a sustainable income for ethnic minority groups in Da Bac District, Hoa Binh Province, Vietnam.

Key Interventions

The project supports local people with access to credit as well as capacity building for the provision of tourism service:

  • funds to renovate their houses and convert them into suitable homestays.
  • training courses that equip local people with the skills to run tourism business activities (cooking courses, welcoming guests, travel safety, art performances, and knowledge regarding sanitation and environmental protection, etc.)

Activities

Da Bac is the perfect location for getting off the tourist trail in Vietnam and experiencing authentic village culture. The homestay owners and local guides are building their capacity to welcome international guests independently. At this early stage, we recommend joining one of our partners on a tour of Da Bac.

Mountain Biking

The quiet roads and trails that link the villages in Da Bac provide the perfect opportunity for visitors to explore the area by bicycle. Bicycle rental is available in Da Bia Village. Bike hire is available at 50,000 VND per day.

Kayaking

Kayaking is available in Da Bia and Ke Village. A morning or afternoon on the Da River or Hoa Binh Reservoir is the perfect way to relax and admire the scenery. Kayak hire is only 120,000 VND a day.

Trekking

A variety of trekking routes are also available. If you are particularly interested in this activity, we highly recommend joining our tour partners or contacting us for more information. Trekking routes offer stunning views of rice terraces, mountain scenery, beautiful streams and dramatic caves.

Specific Objectives

  • Identify and establish partnerships with appropriate stakeholders, such as local communities, local authorities, travel agents and tour operators in order to benefit from their experience, support and involvement;
  • Research, select, and develop the most appropriate cooperation model for the community;
  • Design value proposition, products and services based on the results of a previously-conducted market analysis;
  • Provide project stakeholders and beneficiaries with the knowledge, skills and assets necessary for the development of CBT projects in the region;
  • Develop appropriate marketing strategies;
  • Share and promote best pro-poor practices and experiences.
