Community-Based Tourism: Empowering Local Communities. Essence of Sabah. 23 January. Online Summit with Expert Panel

Sabah Malaysia have been a frontrunner to promote CBT, and have been organizing The Sabah Community-Based Tourism Fair, which began in 2017.

The principal objective behind developing community-based tourism in Sabah is to alleviate poverty among the local communities by creating new income and job opportunities – a social entrepreneurship approach that acts as a catalyst for community development and capacity building. Some of the jobs that have been created for the locals includes guiding, catering, gardening, housekeeping, maintenance and others. Preserves Malaysia’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Provides travellers with meaningful and memorable experiences. Coastal and island communities, especially in Sabah, offer activities like fishing, snorkelling, and learning about marine conservation from locals.
